Novel TLR2 signaling inhibitor with anti-viral activity

Detailed Technology Description
UMass Medical School researcher Dr. RobertFinberg and colleagues have identified several compounds that are able tospecifically inhibit virus-induced inflammatory responses (Antiviral Res. 2010 87: 295). These compounds represent a novelclass of therapeutics that can be used in the treatment of inflammatory responsesassociated with viral infections.
*Abstract

Viralinfections are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in humans, associatedwith severe inflammatory responses. Viral pathogens such as lymphocyticchoriomeningitis virus (LCMV) activate toll-like receptors (TLRs), a family ofinnate immune receptors, inducing inflammatory responses. Recognition of viral pathogensby TLRs induces TLR- mediated activation of NF-kB signaling leading toproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Thus, development of new novelcompounds that can inhibit of TLR signaling in viral infections would prove tobe of great therapeutic potential for the treatment of a variety of viraldiseases like herpes encephalitis (HSV-1), genital herpes (HSV-2) andcytomegalovirus infections.
