BNIP3 Isoforms and Methods of Use

Detailed Technology Description: A gene-splice variant of Bnip3.prevents heart muscle apoptosis due to doxorubicin. Antagonizing Bnip3 may reduce heart mitochondrial injury and heart muscle damage in patients receiving chemotherapy.

*Abstract: An important undesired effect of Doxorubicin (DOX) and related compounds is heart damage due to disruption of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. DOX uncouples protein 3 and cytochrome c oxidase resulting in apoptosis mediated by Bcl-2-like 19kDa-interacting protein 3 (Bnip3). Inhibition of Bnip3 strongly blocks the cardio-toxic effects of DOX.
