Mono and Dual Codebook Designs for FDD MIMO Systems

Summary
Researchers at Purdue University have developed a codebook that considers a channel's characteristics and antenna structures to reduce feedback overheads. This technology develops Kronecker-product, mono and dual codebooks for FDD massive MIMO systems that consider single and multiple subcarrier scenarios. The purpose of this technology is to exploit characteristics of practical 3D spatial channel mode (SCM) and unitary planar array (UPA) structures.

*Abstract

*Background
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems having a large number of antennas are thought to be a prime solution for enhancing system throughput. It is essential for MIMO systems to have accurate channel state information (CSI) at transmitter to utilize state of the art signal processing techniques facilitating high data rate transmissions. In cellular systems employing frequency division duplexing (FDD), estimated CSI at the receiver is communicated to the transmitter via a feedback link. A large number of feedback bits are needed to quantize CSI accurately for massive MIMO systems having a multitude of antennas. The huge feedback overheads impose a heavy burden on the feedback links.
