- Nonmelanoma skin cancer is the fastest growing type of cancer in the United States. Fortunately, it is preventable and curable if detected early and treated effectively. Among other skin cancer therapies, Mohs micrographic surgery is the only treatment that completely removes tumors with the careful examination of the entire tumor margins. However, in order to make Mohs surgery even more effective, real-time examinations of the entire cancerous area at subcellular levels would be helpful. Mohs surgery generally requires several stages, which can take up to several hours; however, with accurate real-time subcellular imaging, this lengthy procedure could be significantly shortened.
