Northwestern researchers have developed an improved method and system for transapical placement of new valve prosthesis. This technology not only offers percutaneous access for valve replacement, but also has a built-in ability to maintain hemostasis during the procedure and also provides a closure device for surgical incisions. The latter feature provides a solution for the possible risk of excessive bleeding from the left ventricular apex.
