Damascene Template for Directed Assembly and Transfer of Nanoelements

Technology Benefits
Value PropositionThe template:ΓÇóIs completely flat with extremely high throughput as compared to conventional templatesΓÇóIs reusable thousands of times without any additional transfer processΓÇóAllows for a large scale and precise assembly of nanoelements using electrophoresisΓÇóEnables for faster, more uniform, and highly dense assembly of nanoelements as compared to conventional approachesΓÇóEnables a stronger adhesion of nanoelements to substrates avoiding potential peel-offsΓÇóAllows for completion of an assembly and a transfer cycle in less than 10 minutes as compared to hours in the case of conventional approachesΓÇóWould be commercially useful for flexible device manufacturing systems such as electronic devices, strain gauges, biosensors and chemical sensors
Detailed Technology Description
In prior art, many approaches have been used for the assembly of nanoelements (such as nanotubes, nanowires, etc.) for various applications. Some of the commonly known techniques are directed fluidic assembly and surface functionalized assembly. However, these techniques are associated with potential limitations such as longer assembly time and complex assembly steps. Moreover, many additional processes are required for transfer of assembled nanoelements and initiation of next batch of assembly, which reduces the overall manufacturing time and in-turn limit their applicability for large scale processing. At the same time, currently used assembly templates are associated with potential disadvantages such as non-uniform assembly, melting of nanowires, and poor adhesion of nanoelements to substrates. This approach enables the development and use of novel damascene templates for efficient assembly and transfer of nanoelements to substrates for further processing.
