-
Researchers have developed a bioreacter and bioartificial liver system that grows hepatocytes in a gel matrix. The gel matrix provides the hepatocytes with adequate nutrients and the bioreactor can maintain cells indefinitely while allowing the hepatocytes to be used to treat liver failure. The hepatocytes in the bioartificial liver mimic the function of a healthy liver to allow recovery of a patient's liver.
