Whitehead Intellectual Property Office is seeking a licensee for a novel inhibitor of Gwt1, a critical acyltranferase required for the synthesis of fungal glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchors. Fungi are a prominent cause of hospital-acquired infections that are becoming increasingly difficult to control. Scientists in the laboratory of Susan Lindquist have identified a novel chemical compound that induces profound stress in the endoplasmic reticulum of fungi. This compound, called gepinacin, specifically inhibits an essential step in the production of GPI anchors within the ER of fungi, but not mammalian cells.
