ADVANCED GAS DIFFUSION ELECTRODE

Technology Benefits
Simplification of the GDE manufacturing process Reduced PEM fuel cell cost Improved durability
Detailed Technology Description
The commercial viability of low temperature fuel cells for power generation depends upon solving a number of manufacturing, cost and durability problems associated with the catalyst electrodes where the electrochemical reactions take place and the power is generated. The most commonly used gas diffusion layers (GDLs) are Teflon treated carbon paper/cloth covered with a porous layer that contains carbon black spheres and Teflon, hydrophobic materials selected to remove water from the fuel cell. However, the hydrophobic nature of the GDL makes it difficult to use as a support for depositing electrocatalysts in aqueous systems and results in non-uniform distribution or platinum catalyst.

*Abstract
Gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) in polymer electrode membrane (PEM) hydrogen fuel cells represent 45% to 50% of the total fuel cell cost. If fuel cells are to be more widely adopted as part of the growing hydrogen economy then the cost of the technology must reduce.
