Methods of controlling the size and aggregate formation of nanoparticles

Technology Benefits
Size-dependent properties of nanoparticles can be modified to suit specific utilities in medicinal applications, such as mobility, membrane permeability, and capacity to hold drug and/or signaling molecules Enhancement of nanoparticle-mediated imaging signals can be achieved under precise control The size of nanoparticles and the extent of nanoaggregates can be specified to obtain uniform nanoparticle products
Technology Application
Enhancement or modification of the amount of signals emitted by dye-conjugated nanoparticles used in biomedical imaging or environmental analysis Manipulation of drug-bearing capacity and mobility of nanoparticles used in drug delivery
Detailed Technology Description
This is an opportunity to license a set of nanoparticle technologies to produce uniform silica nanoparticles of desired sizes and to form nanoparticle aggregates of preferred shape. Use of nanoparticles has been increasingly adopted for medical applications, such as drug delivery and imaging. For example, nanoparticles containing drug or dye molecules can be conjugated with biological molecules, such as antibodies or receptors, to respectively deliver the drug or emit signals at specific target sites. The extent of nanoparticlesΓÇÖ drug-carrying capacity, mobility or signal emission can be modified by changing the size and aggregate formation of the nanoparticles, but it is difficult to precisely and uniformly manipulate theses parameters using currently known methods. Our nanoparticle technologies employ defined chemical manipulations to create uniform nanoparticles and nanoaggregates of a selected size and shape. These methods provide a simple and inexpensive approach to modify the properties of nanoparticles as needed for particular applications.

*Abstract
The University of North Dakota is actively seeking industry partners to license, develop and commercialize its technologies to control the size and aggregate formation of nanoparticles during production. The manipulation of these parameters influences many aspects of nanoparticle properties, such as capacity and stability, whether they are used as drug carriers or imaging signals.
