*Abstract

BackgroundAmyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a chronic, progressive neurodegenerative disease of motor neurons in the cerebrum, brain stem and spinal cord with concurrent muscle weakness, wasting, and spasticity. ALS is the most common adult-onset motor neuron disease, with an incidence between 1.5 and 2 individuals per 100,000 per year. There is currently no rapid diagnostic test for ALS, with diagnosis based on clinical parameters.TechnologyInvestigators have developed methods for determining the onset of ALS. A sample of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) is analyzed for the presence of one or more biomarkers indicative of ALS. The biomarkers are one or more of the following: C-reactive protein (CRP), cystatin c, plasminogen, complement C3, CysGly-transthyretin, and phosphorylated neurofilament heavy chain (pNFH).
