Liquid Deodorizer for Ostomy Pouches

IP Title
Deodorizing Compositions, Ostomy Devices, and Uses Thereof
Detailed Technology Description
ApplicationA deodorizing solution designed for eliminating unpleasant odors from ostomy pouches.Key BenefitsEliminates unpleasant odor from ostomy pouches.Easy to use.Market SummaryBecause of disease or trauma, part or all of the large intestine, small intestine or bladder may have to be surgically removed. In individuals who undergo these procedures, surgeons make an ostomy, a surgically created opening in the abdominal wall for the discharge of bodily wastes. Waste is collected in an ostomy pouch, which fits over the ostomy. These ostomy pouches can release a strong and unpleasant odor when the pouch becomes full and must be emptied. Individuals who wear an ostomy pouch may be understandably self-conscious of this odor and look for ways to minimize it. As the pouches are adherent to the patient, any deodorizing solutions would have to be light weight, small, and easy to use to prevent any discomfort from use, undesired observable bulges in a patients clothing, and quick adoption by patients. There is an unmet need for long lasting and conveniently applied odor control for ostomy pouches.Technical SummaryAn Emory nurse and an engineer invented an easy to use deodorizing solution to be placed in ostomy pouches. The formula has been designed to impregnate the material of an ostomy pouch or light weight ostomy pouch insert/carrier for sustained delivery of the deodorizing agent. It is attached to the inside of an ostomy pouch by the patient or caregiver. In addition, this solution may be applied to any ostomy pouch as a booster shot to improve odor control. This solution may provide long-lasting and conveniently applied odor control for ostomy pouches.Developmental StagePrototype of liquid deodorizer has been synthesized and used for proof of concept.
