- *Abstract
-
Psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD), a viral disease affecting Old World and New World parrots, is caused by a Circovirus known as beak and feather disease virus (BFDV). Infection with the virus causes progressive feather, claw and beak malformation and necrosis. The disease can manifest in an acute fatal form and a chronic form.
No treatment is available, therefore, management of the disease relies on prevention. Testing of newly acquired birds for BFDV is imperative before introduction into a population. Researchers at the University of Georgia (UGA) developed an effective PCR-based diagnostic test for PBFD which has been used effectively to assess clinical samples in the UGA Infectious Disease Lab.
