Overview
Carbon is an attractive material for use within lithium battery systems to the accepted standard of manganese dioxide due to the potential to improve performance. Coal is an abundant source and cheap source of carbon, but manyof the carbon-based materials utilized as cathodes in primary lithium batteriesare expensive. Additionally, these batteries have limitations such as lowpractical rate capability, low operating voltage during discharge, and heatgeneration during the discharge process. UK researchers are developing an approach that nullifies these adverse effects and allows coal to function as a carbon source in electrical applications.
Invention
UK researchers propose using anthracite coal, a natural carbonprecursor material, to prepare activated carbon for energy storageapplications. Carbon monofluoride (CFx) generated in this lab demonstrated improved ion transport anda more conductive surface through a second mild hydrothermal treatment, whichdefluorinates the original CFx material.
Applications
- energy storage devices (batteries)
Advantages
- utilizes an economical carbon precursor
- produces a high-quality CFx material for use inenergy storage devices
- improved specific capacity at high discharge rates
