University of MissouriOffice of Technology Management & Industry RelationsNon-Confidential Abstract of InventionUM Disclosure No. 12UMC027A Novel Nanoplatform for Accurate Detection of EGFR in Tumor Tissues INNOVATIONResearchers at the University of Missouri have developed a gold nanoparticle based EGFR detection kit specifically designed to determine EGFR expression levels on the surface of tumor cells. Current FDA approved EGFR detection kits are not sufficient, showing widely ranging expression levels between kits, and failing to detect low levels of tumor cell surface expression. MU’s EGFR detection kit can detect both high and low levels of EGFR, enabling clinicians a more detailed analysis of tumor tissue, providing excellent evidence on how to proceed with treatment. BACKGROUNDEpidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a transmembrane protein that is a receptor site for the epidermal growth factor family of proteins. A number of cancer cells have been associated with overexpression of EGFR on the surface of their cell membrane including colorectal, non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC), head and neck carcinoma, and glioblastoma. This known overexpression can be utilized to create a strong detection kit for EGFR overexpressed tumors.APPLICATIONS• Detection of EGFR expressed tumor cellsADVANTAGES• Accurately detect high and low levels EGFR expressionPATENT STATUS• Patent pendingLICENSING POTENTIAL• University seeks licensee with the potential to commercializeINVENTOR(S)• Raghuraman Kannan• Charles Caldwell Jr• Charles Caldwell• Nripen Chanda• Ajit Zambre• Gerald Arthur• Mythili RamachandranCONTACT INFO Office of Technology Management & Industry Relations Brian Buntaine, MS, MBA Senior Licensing & Business Development Associate Email: buntaineb@missouri.edu Phone: 573-882-0470
