Sharps Injury Reduction Laboratory Test Tube Rack

Detailed Technology Description
Researchers at the University of Iowa have developed a novel test tube rack that prevents users from accidental needle sticks. This test tube rack lowers the risk of transferring bloodborne pathogens because it only requires one hand to extract and insert blood samples. As shown in the figure, the rack allows the syringe to be inserted into the vial and held in place while blood or other samples are transferred. Advantages Decreased risk of accidental needle sticks Storage capacity for multiple syringes and vials without contamination Usable with one hand
*Abstract

OSHA estimates that 5.6 million workers in the healthcare industry and related occupations are at risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Accidental needle sticks are the most common method of transport for bloodborne pathogens from one person to another. Following the Needlestick Safety and Prevention act of 2000, sharps related injuries have decreased only 21.6%. Current test tube racks require the user to extract or insert the blood sample with a syringe using both of their hands. This increases the risk of an accidental needle stick due to one of the user's hands near the needle of the syringe.
