Mixed solvent and stripping chemical for CO2 removal from combustion gases - 1712

*Abstract

Overview

The use of scrubbing solvents to capture CO2 frompost-combustion gases is common practice in coal-fired power plants throughoutthe country.  Conventional solvents, while generally effective for their intendedpurpose, can be markedly improved in terms of CO2 absorption andrecovery, required operating temperatures, and energy requirements.  UKresearchers are developing a mixed solvent and stripping carrier to addressthese shortcomings.

Invention

Researchers at the University of Kentucky are developing amixed solvent and stripping chemical for CO2 removal from combustiongases.  The disclosed solvent includes an amine and a low fraction of ammoniafor CO2 removal, and the stripping carrier features a low latentenergy to assist in solvent regeneration.  The use of ammonia in the solventallows for a reduction in sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide vapor pressurewhile increasing the solvent capacity.  This solvent would be especially usefulfor coal-fired power plants looking to decrease the economic impact of theiroperations by efficiently removing carbon.

Advantages

  • higher mass-transfer flux, whichallows a smaller absorber to capture the same amount of CO2
  • higher carbon capacity
  • less energy demand for CO2stripping
