New Class of Mosquitocide

Detailed Technology Description

InventionThe new technology developed is a compound developed using thiopyran methodology that has a unique hit in mosquito assays. The novel compound, FL-II-185, is a new class of mosquito selective inhibitor of blood feeding female mosquitoes. The compound inhibits nutrient processing in mosquitoes and is lethal. Additionally, the screening method used to identify the compound FL-II-185 could be used to identify additional mosquito-selective inhibitors of blood meal metabolism.BackgroundNumerous diseases are spread by mosquitoes. One example, Dengue virus, is a mosquito born virus that infects ~250 million humans per year. The spread of mosquito-borne diseases can be restricted by decreasing mosquito populations in areas of high pathogen transmission. AdvantagesTargets blood feeding female mosquitoes using biochemistryDoes not work by neurotoxicitySafe for use in agricultural areasNot lethal in other insects such as beesPotential use in other arthropods which feed on human bloodApplicationsPharmacological applications, it will be sold as an individual pharmaceutical drug.Perhaps a government or Ngo sponsored program to prevent mosquito breeding.Agriculture as a secondary vector for mosquito-borne illness.May be some application for this particular chemical in a formulation with other chemicals.
