Fabrication Process of Heterogeneous 3D Materials and Tissue Implants

Detailed Technology Description
This technology describes an algorithm and material deposition device that enables fabrication of three dimensional heterogeneous material that could be used as tissue implants and replacement parts.
Others

Patent application: US20140052285

*Abstract

The device can be applied to an existing fabrication device, such as the Cornell Fabber, a printer that creates complex structures by depositing material in three dimensions, layer by layer. This improved feature could be used to develop better scaffold designs for tissue engineering, and when combined with cells, allows for the fabrication of living heterogeneous materials.

Cornell researchers have used photo-crosslinkable hydrogels with differing mechanical properties and differing cell populations to successfully recreate the structure for a heart valve.

Potential Application

Medical implants can be fabricated from living heterogeneous materials using information obtained from a scan of the original tissue.

Advantages

  • Createsnatural living parts that could be more easily incorporated into the body thanartificial parts.
  • Partscan be manufactured in any lab in the world that has the equipment.
