Patent application: WO2011109687

*Abstract

Cornell researchers have developed a novel gear apparatus allowing transmission of motion in two directions. These bidirectional gears are based on a modified spur gear having teeth arrayed in two directions, both radially and along the axis of the gear. By mating a "male" and "female" version, the invention can transmit both rotational and translational motion and power in two directions. While studied currently in the field of modular robot design, the gears could find application in a wide range of devices, potentially replacing complex, many-geared systems with a simple two-gear design.

Drawing of bidirectional gears illustrating linearly and rotationally actuated male gear causing either rotational or translational response in female gear.
