A Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) that Influences Tomato Fruit Ripening

Detailed Technology Description
The current invention describes a Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) for molecular breeding or transgenic approach to control fruit ripening time that greatly improves the quality of the fruit that arrives to the end consumer.
Others

Patent issued in the U.S. under the number U.S. 9,150,623

*Abstract

Successful commercialization of tomatoes and other fruit crops depends upon post-harvest ripening time, and upon the quality of the fruit that arrives to the end consumer. Loss of firmness is a major factor that limits transportation and storage of fleshy fruits. While several tomato ripening mutants have been identified, they impart some undesirable effects on the ripening process, such as unacceptable fruit color, flavor, and aroma. An improved fruit product, with combined aspects of fruit ripeness and quality along with prolonged shelf-life, offers an economical solution.

Potential Advantages

  • The specific SNP was present in several prolonged shelf life genotypes
  • Delayed fruit deterioration (dfd) fruit ripen in the homozygous state, unlike other ripening mutants, which are used in hybrids
  • Fruit can be harvested at a later stage, thus higher nutritional qualities are maintained
  • Fruit is resistant to over-softening, while it maintains highly desirable qualities of color, flavor, and aroma
  • Greatly improved capability to transport and store fruit for longer periods of time
