*Abstract

Cornell researchers have recently developed a novel "lab on a chip" device capable of very sensitive detection of biological and chemical substances as well as manipulation and control of such substances in solution. Nanofluidic channels having integrated nanowires are filled with a solution, which is subsequently monitored and manipulated based on the electrical current in the nanowires. Applying a novel combination of various micro- and nano-fabrication techniques, the device enables enhanced lab on a chip performance in a small, inexpensive package. Applications for the technology are wide-ranging and include areas such as clinical diagnostics, pathogen detection, and DNA analysis.
