Ultrasonic Horn Actuated Microprobe-based Self-calibrating Viscosity Sensor

Detailed Technology Description
An ultrasonic or acoustic viscosity sensor or viscometer is provided thatcan be used to accurately measure viscosity for fluid samples of less than 1 µlin volume.

*Abstract

Since the shear(non-linear vibration) and bulk (silicon horn’s λ/2 longitudinal resonance)damping can be observed at the two different frequencies, we can simultaneouslymeasure the bulk and dynamic (shear-rate dependent) viscosityof a fluid such as blood, without separating its constituents -- thus distinguishing the effect of constituents on the viscosity.

Furthermore, since the viscosity is a strong function of probeinsertion, a self-calibration feature has been integrated into the ultrasonic viscometer via capacitance-based immersion depth sensors that calibrates the viscosity measurement based on fluid immersion.  This capability is essential given that probe insertion depth can vary by operator.

Potential Applications

  • Compact viscosity sensor
  • Medical diagnostics, e.g. real-time whole blood viscosity measurement
  • Laboratory testing, R&D, etc.

Advantages

  • Simultaneous measurement of bulk and dynamic viscosity
  • Requires very little sample volume < 1 µl
  • Self-calibrating
  • High sensitivity in the range of normal blood viscosity
  • Configurable and tunable to measure non-Newtonian fluids based on constituent particle size
  • Can be integrated into CMOS diagnostic chips
