Novel Multi-Wavelength Pulse Generator Using Time-Lens Compression

Others
*Abstract

Researchers at Cornell have developed a system and method for generating short laser pulses (ps or fs) from a continuous wave (CW) laser without modelocking.  Multi-wavelength pulse trains can also be conveniently obtained.  By using a phase modulator acting as a "time-lens" in combination with a dispersion element, the invention is capable of using conventional, independently controlled CW laser sources to generate a multi-wavelength pulse train having evenly spaced compressed pulses.  The time-lens system is able to simultaneously achieve pulse compression and displacement in accordance with the pulses' center wavelengths.  This technology promises to deliver "pulse on demand" where the repetition rate, pulse width, and the pulse pattern can be completely controlled by electronics.
