- *Abstract
-
Cornell research scientists have fabricated a 20 mm long tunable Fabry-Perot (F-P) cavity on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) which can strongly modulate light flow in a waveguide. The F-P cavity is designed on a 3 rib waveguide by deep etched Si/SiO2 Distributed Bragg Reflectors. The use of deep DBRs increases significantly the reflectivity of the mirrors and, as a result, the finesse of the cavity. Significant modulation can be achieved using a drive power as low as 20mW and the dissipated power is two orders of magnitude smaller than that reported for existing F-P devices of similar performance.
