Efficient Induction of Haploid Plants

- Detailed Technology Description
- Due to their role in producing homozygous lines, haploid plants are of significant importance in the improvement of plant breeding programs. Despite occurring spontaneously in nature, they are very rare and of little practical value. Other procedures, such as anther culture, are currently used to generate haploid plants in crops such as wheat, rice, and corn but these methods are not only time consuming and laborious but have varying levels of efficiency, resulting in haploid induction resistance. Researchers at the University of California, Davis have developed a novel, more efficient technique for the haploid induction of plants. By altering the expression of a specific protein found in the maternal haploid of sexually reproducing diploid plants, viable seed is generated with an increased proportion of haploid progeny. These seeds can then be tested prior- or post- germination for haploidy, allowing for subsequent breeding and generation of doubled haploid plants. By streamlining the plant breeding process, this new method offers a quicker, more reliable method for haploid and double haploid induction of plants.
