Method And Apparatus For Imaging The Upper Airway During Sleep And Wakefulness
- Technology Benefits
- -Minimally invasive. -Potential for continuous video through entire night of sleep. -Can be performed in tandem with conventional polysomnography.
- Technology Application
- Imaging of the upper airway. Provides images in vivo of how the airway collapses during sleep for subsequent clinical analysis.
- Detailed Technology Description
- Obstructive sleep apnea is a problem of immense proportions. Surgical treatments are limited to a success rate of no greater than 50%. Currently there are no reliable means to identify the precise location of the upper airway obstruction. Researchers at the University of California, Irvine have developed a method and device that accomplishes the visualization of the airway that does not require specialized endoscopy centers and the services of anesthesiologists. The proposed device uses cameras and light sources to image the upper airway during sleep and provide continuous video recordings of the internal upper airway at multiple points.
