*Abstract
There Is a growing demand for synthelic materials to repair damaged or diseased bone in humans and animals.Current treatments using bone autograft, bone allograft, or metal implants suffer from concerns and limitations, suchas limited supply, donor site morbidity, immune rejection, and potential transmission of pathogens. Current syntheticmaterials for bone repair consist of porous polymers, ceramics and glasses (bioactlve, or inert), metals, orcomposites of these basic material types. Bioaclive ceramics and bioactive glasses are attractive syntheticmaterials for bone repair because of their wideiy recognized ability to support the growth of bone cells, and to bondstrongly with hard and soft tissue. Current synthetic scaffolds for bone repair serve a mechanical function tosupport physiological loads, as well as a structural function to support new tissue igrowth into the pores of thescaffold and to integrate with surrounding bone or tissue. This invention describes multifunctional synthetic scaffolds which provide a drug release function, In addition to themechanical and structural functions of current scaffolds, and a method for preparing such multifunctional scaffolds. The porous three-dimensional scaffold provides the mechanical and structuralfunction, whereas the porous or hollow HA microspheres (When filled with the required drug) provide a device forcontrolled release of drugs (e.g., proteins; growth factors; antibiotics; etc.).
