*Abstract
Arthritis and trauma are a major problem and one of the leading causes of physical disabilities, necessitating billion-dollar expenditures annually in medical care and rehabilitation. Many times replacing a joint is necessary; our invention describes a method for the preparation of porous titanium (Ti) implants for the repair of diseased or damaged bone. These Ti implants have the requisite mechanical properties to match the strength and elastic modulus of bone. The Ti implants are also coated with a layer of bioactive glass to improve their biocompatibility and the interfacial bonding with bone. This results in a stronger, longer lasting solution.POTENTIAL AREAS OF APPLICATION:• Repairing diseased or damaged boneMAIN ADVANTAGES OF INVENTION:• Ability to match elastic modulus of multiple human bones which leads to reduced stress shielding• Potential for improved bonding with bone, improved bone ingrowth into the implant, and the release of drugs or antibioticsSTAGE OF DEVELOPMENT:• PreclinicalPATENT STATUS:• Provisional patent application filedCONTACT INFO:Paul Hippenmeyer, Sr. Licensing & Business Development AssociateOffice of Technology Management and Industry Relations Email: hippenmeyerp@missouri.edu Phone: 573-882-0470
