Multi-Material Window/Skylight Treatment Addresses Dynamic Occupant Needs and External Conditions

Technology Benefits
Supports use of multiple, rollable window treatments, under one system Cost-effective method of addressing various performance needs under different conditions
Technology Application
Multi-use window and skylight treatment
Detailed Technology Description
The performance of windows and skylights depends on the context of their application in terms of outdoor conditions and indoor occupancy needs. Current static and dynamic window treatment systems address a wide variety of needs such as view, privacy, glare, daylight harvesting, solar heat control, etc. There are however, no systems in existence that can address multiple possible combinations of needs and/or account for multiple external conditions. Researchers at the University of California, Davis have developed a unique multi-material rolling system for window and skylight applications that addresses the dynamic nature of external conditions and varying needs of indoor occupants. This bi-roller multi-material system can be composed of one or more materials, such as different films, fabrics, screens, etc. The different materials are connected sequentially in the form of one long rolling system, which can make use of any individual or any two consecutive materials to address specific needs under specific conditions. The operation can be manual and/or automated based on input from sensors
