Rapid Assay Including But Not Limited To Lateral Flow Assay For The Detection Of Specific Hormones In Ill Neonatal Foals And Foals With Maladjustment

Technology Benefits
This invention will allow the rapid identification of ‘Dummy Foals’ as well as a direction for intervention and treatment.
Technology Application
Development of a rapid ‘stall-side’ diagnostic for Neonatal Maladjustment Syndrome A new opportunity for the treatment of Dummy Foals
Detailed Technology Description
With tens of thousands of horses born each year, the effective diagnosis and prompt treatment of Dummy Foals, also known as Neonatal Maladjustment Syndrome, represents a significant opportunity.   These Dummy Foals don’t suckle or stand and appear unresponsive.    Many of these affected foals may seem normal at first, then rapidly deteriorate and can die without supportive intervention.  There are many suspected causes of this devastating ailment, and no available diagnostics to predict which foals may be affected, or potential treatments for this syndrome.  Until now.      Recently, a fundamental underlying cause of Neonatal Maladjustment Syndrome was discovered by UC Davis researcher, Dr. John Madigan, DVM.   This newly discovered physiological error easily lends itself to the development of a rapid diagnostic assay and effective therapeutic intervention.   If every foal born was tested using a rapid ‘stall-side’ assay, dummy foal deaths may become a thing of the past.
