Summary: Hybrid material used for orthopedic implantation for bone fracture fixation. Can be used as different orthopedic implant including bone screws and bone plates. Can also be used in cardiovascular, dental, and/or renal procedures; and in innumerable non-medical applications such as in consumer goods, where a durable substitute for metal or plastic is desired.
Novelty: Hybrid material used for orthopedic implantation comprises biodegradable polymer, surface-treated biodegradable metallic material, and silane coupling agent chemically bonded to metallic material and biodegradable polymer

Invention
Contrast agents are used in a multitude of medical diagnostic procedures including MRIs, ultrasounds, and CT scans. University of Florida researchers have developed a new type of contrast agent that combines all the benefits of a number of presently available agents for different purposes into one single agent. The proposed multi-faceted contrast agent will be an all-in-one solution for CT, MRI, ultrasound, and fluorescence imaging.Applications
Multi-faceted contrast agent for medical imagingAdvantages
- Provides more precise data which contributes to better diagnostic capabilities of medical professionals, resulting in higher quality of service for clients
- Supplies multiple levels of information, allowing for concurrent testing of multiple procedures, which translates to a unique advantage over competitors
Technology
The technology is composed of a few nanometer sized semi-conductor crystals (called quantum dots, QDs) that are engineered for medical imaging applications. Before a diagnostic procedure, they are inserted into the blood stream where they travel the body and stain tissue. During the test, the QDs can glow, respond magnetically, and also absorb radio waves. Data supplied by these three functions makes QDs ideal for providing florescence, radio-opacity, ultra-sound and MRI contrast for a variety of diagnostic medical imaging applications. Importantly, all these properties are independent.
