- Researchers at McGill have developed a sensor for detecting, in real-time, the erosion of a wear surface of a component, particularly a liner attached to the mill shell of a rotating grinding mill. The sensor consists of a conductive element embedded in the component, such as the liner of the mill. As the surface of the component wears to the height of the sensor, the circuit becomes exposed and subsequently damaged, changing the input of the sensor and indicating that the surface has worn to the height of the sensor. Installing multiple sensors throughout the component at various depths gives the state of wear or erosion of the component.
