Methods for Detecting Biofilm In-Situ from Seismic Data

Summary
OSU researchers have developed a methodfor detecting biofilm in-situ in fieldconditions from seismic data. The invention is based on inventors’ research onbiofilms and seismic technology and has been proven through a combination ofmodeling, field experiments and laboratory tests. The developed method is also thefirst research that can detect in-situbiofilms growth in field conditions and will benefit many communities such as thoseperusing remediation, microbial enhanced oil recovery or CO2 sequestration.

*Background
Formation of biofilms is a predominantway of life for most microorganisms in the environment. Biofilms compriseextracellular polysaccharides (EPS), which is a gel type material playing avital role in attachment of microbial cells to growth surfaces. Biofilms are quintessentialbyproducts of hydrocarbon degradation. Thus, their detection could be criticalin assessing environmental remediation, carbon sequestration, and enhanced oilrecovery. However, in-situ detectionof biofilms in field conditions has remained an unresolved problem.
*Stage of Development
A workingmodel is available and has undergone field-testing.
