- Background Fli1b, Friend leukemia virus integration 1b, is a Fli 1 related protein and memberof the ETS family of transcription factors. ETS transcription factors play an essential role in hematopoiesis,angiogenesis and vasculargenesis, most being direct targets for endothelialgene expression. Recentstudies performed in zebrafish have demonstrated the combinatorial role of Fli1b with other ETS related proteins, namely Etsrp, Ets1 and Fli 1, as necessaryfor endothelial specification and differentiation. Specifically, these proteins play an early rolein hemangioblast development, driving these precursor cells to differentiate toboth myeloid and endothelial cells. Whilevasculature has traditionally been studied in mammals, zebrafish provide anovel model for vascular research. Zebrafish offer the advantage of rapid development, embryo transparencyand many of the molecular players in vasculargenesis are functionallyconserved. Technology Dr. Lawson’s laboratory at UMass Medical School has developed thefirst antibody to recognize the zebrafish protein Fli 1b. This rabbit polyclonal antibody recognizesthe N-terminal end of the zebrafish Fli 1b protein, providing specificrecognition of the protein without any cross-reactivity with other ETStranscription factors and the ability to immunologically monitor the expressionand localization of the protein, which was not previously possible.
