Precursor to Terephthalic Acid
- Detailed Technology Description
 - Terephthalic acid and adipicacid are commodity chemicals used by the polymer industry to manufacturepolyesters, such as PET, which have a variety of applications. Terephthalicacid is mainly produced via aerobic catalytic oxidation of aromatichydrocarbons, and adipic acid is produced via the oxidation of cyclichydrocarbons or the carboxylation of butadiene. These processes have drawbacks relatedto the use of harmful and difficult to prepare raw materials adding to theproduction cost of the final chemicals. Researchers at the University ofDelaware have devised a novel, innovative and inexpensive method for productionof an alternative precursor to terephthalic acid.
