Wearable Simulation System for Teaching Close Chest Drainage Systems to Future Healthcare Providers

Detailed Technology Description: The ClosedChest Drainage System is a modularized, wearable simulation system that isusable for educating future health care providers with appropriate assessment,decision making, prioritization and communication with a patient that has had aclosed chest drainage system placed. This system will establish a negativepressure environment thereby simulating the negative pressure in the chest andhave sensors to allow the device to identify the “simulated patients” realrespirators to enable the closed drainage system to fluctuate and tidal withnormal respirations. Additionally, the device will provide cues for nursingstudents when the chest tube is not functioning properly (air leak,subcutaneous emphysema, clogged chest tube). This device will offer an opportunityto have simulations that are high stakes/low volume (i.e. tension pneumothorax,dislodged chest tube).
