A Device to Quantify Leaf Chlorophyll Content
- Summary
- Researchers at Purdue University developed a method and system for spectrometer-less hyperspectral imaging that can map out detailed spatial distribution of chlorophyll content, which is a key trait for determining the physiological condition of plants. The combination of a handheld type imaging system and a hyperspectral reconstruction algorithm offers the simplicity for instrumentation and operation, avoiding the use of an imaging spectrograph. In addition, this imaging platform can be integrated into a compact, inexpensive, portable imager for plant biologists and ecophysiologists.

- *Background
- The ongoing extreme drought in California contributed to an estimated $1.5 billion revenue loss for their agricultural economy in 2014. Monitoring stress symptoms in plants is crucial to maximize crop productivity. Loss of chlorophyll is one of the key symptoms that plants display under such stress. Current methods for quantifying chlorophyll involve the use of destructive biochemical analysis and the use of optical meters; however, these methods lack information on spatial distribution. There is an unmet need for plant imaging technologies that accurately and sensitively quantify chlorophyll content, while resolving spatial heterogeneity.
