Determining Rotor Position at Both Low and High Speeds

Summary
Researchers at Purdue University have developed an algorithm to estimate the rotor position of a PMSM from zero to high speeds, providing the accuracy of an optical encoder system, but at a substantially lower cost. Furthermore, this technology can utilize advanced control techniques, such as torque ripple mitigation, in the operation of the machine.

*Abstract

*Background
In order for a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) to operate properly, knowledge of the rotor position in the system is required. Typically, an in-line position encoder or three discrete Hall effect sensors are used to determine the rotor's position. While encoder systems are accurate, they are expensive, and Hall effect sensor systems are more cost effective, but they are not as accurate.
