Technology

Perovskite solar cellshave great potential as the next generation of industrial solar cells due totheir low production costs, high efficiencies, and relatively simple processingas compared with traditional silicon solar cells.  Since perovskite solar cells were firstreported in 2012, various techniques have been developed for improvingperovskite film morphology to enable higher performance perovskite solar cells.  To date, however, such approaches remaindifficult to scale and thus have deterred industry adoption.

    

University of Louisville researchers have developed an innovativeapproach for the scalable manufacture of efficient CH3NH3PbI3perovskite solar cells.  Theprocess involves the rapid (~2 ms) sintering of methyl ammonium lead iodideperovskite using an intense pulsed light source to create dense photoactivelayers with large crystal sizes (~1 µm). This development creates an exciting new method to quickly create denselayers of perovskite and eliminates the rate-limiting annealing step of existingapproaches.
