The reliability and accuracy of quality determination is improved in thequality determination of fuel such as diesel fuel. The values of the ignition delay and flame spread rate of fuel to be determinedare measured, the quality of thefuel to be determined is determined on the basis of the quality of fueldetermined by a first range if the measured value of the ignition delay is in a range smaller than areference line (71) or in a range greater than a reference line (72), which is the first range, and the quality ofthe fuel to be determined is determined depending on whether or not themeasured value of the flame spread rate is in the range of a good-qualityproduct on the basis of a straight line (81) which is a criterion if themeasured value of the ignition delay is in a range from the reference line (71)to the reference line (72), which is a secondrange.
