UV Curable Low Surface Energy Coatings for Fouling Release and Anti-Graffiti Applications

Technology Benefits
Coatings are solvent, water, and acrylate free, eliminating health hazardsassociated with acrylates. Low cost of manufacturing due to low levels of siloxane used. Does not suffer from oxygen inhibition
Detailed Technology Description
This invention relates to the synthesis of siloxane-modified unsaturatedpolyester oligomers, blending the oligomers with vinyl ethers and aphotoinitiator, and curing the formulation to form a coating that has lowsurface energy. A monohydroxy, a telechelic, and a dihydroxy terminatedPDMS is used for unsaturated polyester synthesis, which is then UV-cured withtriethyleneglycol divinylether as the reactive diluent. These coatings aresolvent-free and can be crosslinked within a few minutes.

*Abstract
Scientists at NDSU have invented a novel polyester composition that is UV-curable and exhibits low surface energy. The composition contains polydimethuylsiloxane (PDMS) and involves mixing polyesters with coreactantsand photoinitiators, and curing the compounds using either visible of ultraviolet(UV) light. These coatings are useful in applications where low surface energy is desired such as marine ship hulls, anti-graffiti surfaces, release coatings, and protective wood coatings with easily cleanable surfaces.
