BackgroundIn general, tissue stiffness changes have been important indications of the development of pathological lesions in soft tissues. In the past, along with other elasticity imaging modalities, such as magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) and magnetic resonance tagging (tMRI), ultrasound elasticity imaging (UEI) or elastography has been developed for measuring, or otherwise evaluating, soft tissue elastic properties. Unfortunately, current methods and systems have significant shortcomings that limit or restrict the accuracy and effectiveness of evaluating tissue stiffness changes to identify or recognize the development of pathological lesions in soft tissues.TechnologyA new method of nonlinear characterization of tissue stiffness using ultrasound elasticity imaging has been developed and tested. These techniques can identify subtle stiffness changes related to acute inflammation and fibrosis in an animal model. Application Advantages* Acutely inflamed tissues can be differentiated from normal tissues or chronically fibrosed tissues, which was not possible using a conventional ultrasound elasticity imaging or sonoelsatography.Stage of Development* Human dataPCT patent application filed
