*Abstract
The inventors have invented a novel skin surface electrode design for biopotential measurement used in EEG and EKG. The new design will have multiple advantages over the existing electrodes. It's targeted to reduce the huge amount of skin preparation required for common skin surface electrode, and to increase the spatial resolution and long term stability.The new design is based on a conducting polymer hydrogel composite doped with reagents that either stabilize the hydration level or enhance the ionic conductivity of the skin. The electrode can be made into a pin-tipped shape that will serve well to penetrate hairs, have properties that make them simultaneously soft and mechanically strong and remain hydrated for extended periods of time. The new electrode has specific impedance lower than the currently used disk shaped electrode. Such design allows significantly more electrodes to be placed on the scalp which is necessary for high resolution EEG. The reduced need for skin preparation is another practical advantage. Finally the electrode can be constructed with polymer only, so it is MRI friendly. Non Provisional Patent Application Filed
