A directional antenna with a variable beam direction

Summary

A planar and low-profile high gain antenna with an ability to change direction of radiation to any desired location in a conical region, covering a major portion of the upper hemisphere,  without severe performance penalty.

Technology Benefits

Concealable, installed in limited space, more aerodynamic.
Inexpensive, no RF loss in electronics, no biasing, high system efficiency, no non-linearity, no thermal problems, better power handling, insensitive to ambient temperature, longer operation from a battery if required.
No RF joints, simple rotation of thin light metasurfaces, simpler configuration, less cost.
No polariser plates required; can dynamically switch between LHCP, RHCP and LP.
High efficiency, high gain.

Technology Application

Low-cost, low profile cubestat terminals.
User terminals for LEO and MEO satellites - eg internet to remote communities.
Internet to airborne and space platforms from satellites.
Connectivity to defence mobile platforms.
Rapid deployment platforms - emergency operations.
Communication to ships.
COTM terminals for GEO satellites.
satellite TV to mobile platforms including ships.

Detailed Technology Description

A new method to adjust the beam direction of a planar antenna without performance penalty.

There are no electronic devices in the antenna, i.e. it is totally passive. Hence its performance (efficiency and gain) is very high. It does need continuous power (DC or AC). The antenna has a planar configuration, so it can be attached to planar walls or roofs of buildings and easily hidden. In other words, it can be integrated with existing and future buildings, in contrast to incompatible stand out protruding installations of dish antennas.
