Calixurenes - novel binding molecules (Technion)
- Summary
- Macrocyclic host molecules can be applied in a wide range of uses in chemistry, biology, the food industry, electronics, printing and more. Despite this, for more than a decade no new family of host molecule has been discovered. All of the known macrocycles are limited to specific applications according to their chemical nature and binding properties. The invention, the family of Calixurenes, refers to the type of molecules, cyclic and linear, having the following general form:
These are the first binding macrocycles that contain thiourea combined with aromatic fragments and phenolic functions. This unique combination of functional groups in the same molecule allows for yet unknown modes and strengths of binding, including all scales from metal atoms to nanoparticles to macroscopic surfaces.
- Technology Benefits
- • Except for totally new host-guest chemistry, the calixurenes are expected to have unprecedented strong binding with high selectivity to almost any metal in any oxidation state.
• The binding properties are not expected to be dependent on the environment.
- Technology Application
- Calixurenes are expected to be useful in a wide range of fields including:
• Drug delivery, chelation therapy, protein binding and tagging, specific ion binding and delivery
• Chemical analysis, surface chemistry, modification of surface properties and functionalization,
• Nanotechnology, nanoparticles, nanoelectronics
• Catalysis, asymmetric synthesis
• Membrane modifications, ion channels
• Functional polymers, adhesives
