Vaccination is most commonly administered by needle and syringe. Although effective, it has many limitations such as pain and cross-infection. To address these limitations, many techniques were developed and, among them, polymer dissolving microneedle arrays recently attracted great interest. Compared with the prior silicon and metal microneedles in the field, polymer dissolving microneedle arrays have overwhelming advantages including ease of fabrication, low cost, no safety concern of needle breakage, and no sharp waste. However, fast-dissolving polymers generally have very low mechanical strength, making the very small and densely packed microneedles difficult for human application. Therefore, we introduced using nano-additives to dramatically strengthen the mechanical properties of polymers without sacrificing their dissolution rate within skin.
