Summary
Positioning and location identification is useful in a number of industrial fields. In logistics and transportation domain, such information provides an in-depth understanding to the whole supply chain for example by knowing the position of each cargo, carrier, vehicles, and even human at real-time. At present, there are two systems available for detecting the positions: Global Positioning System (GPS) and Indoor Positioning System (IPS). The former one has great value in determining the position of a user around the globe but it requires a good view of the sky at all times. The latter one does not have a high precision for logistics applications and problem always aroused if any of the access points fails to work.

The invention is about a robust method for precise in-house positioning utilizing RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology. A set of RFID tags are labeled in the environment. Sample readings or RFID tags are first collected when RFID antenna and reader are placed at each location. The position can then be estimated based on the reading pattern. The precision can be within one meter. In addition, if the effective RFID field of the antenna is not concentric, for one location, reading samples when vehicle facing different direction is also recorded, so that later the direction could also be determined. The detection is of high precision for logistics applications and of low cost.

The invention can be used in different tag distribution, reader range, defective tags, and other alterable physical constrains.
