Methods for Embedding Data in Digital Audio Data

Summary
The Internet has been a widely-adopted means of media distribution in these days especially after the introduction of MPEG file format. To gain control over listeners', on-line suppliers of music files use authentication schemes to control listeners' access and access mode. Such arrangements require Server/Client communication, client authorization and encryption/decryption, which could be very costly. Another method adopted, commonly in the distribution of trial version of music pieces, is the use of proprietary file format and player/device that cannot avoid listeners to skip the usually embedded banner advertisements.

Music files packaged with this invention can be played on standard player in their native file format. If a file is not properly handled, despite the advertisement, if inserted, and the non-tamper section of the music can be played normally on standard player/device, the tampered section of the music will be distorted and irrecoverable. The new invention also enables the embedding of additional information like company logos in the files, which can serve as a digital watermark. The new technique is format independent, meaning it is compatible with a wide range of existing file compressing standards and technologies which ensures a broad supporting platform. The application can be extended to other media domains, such as image and video; as well to the analog domain. This invention helps protecting the interests of copyright owner by using digital watermark, advertisement and the imperfectness of music.
Technology Benefits
Unlike existing methods, distribution of music through the Internet with this new invention no longer requires user authentication or encryption or proprietary music players and devices while still being able to control listeners' access and access mode to the music files.

This new invention can package media files, especially music files, to have digital watermark and irremovable embedded audio advertisements in trial versions where the original 'full version' of the music can be delivered. It is not a replacement of Rights Management systems (RMS), although it solves the problems that most of them do not cover.
Technology Application
- Trial listening of digital music through Internet
- Shareware distribution of music on Internet
- Distribution of files in media domains (e.g. image, video) or in analog domain through Internet
