- Summary
- Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays are thinner, lighter, power saving, and are more responsive than liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Present designs of double-sided displays involve physically putting two displays in one back-to-back assembly. This limits OLEDs to very few commercial applications.
The present invention allows such double-sided displays to be made in one single display. The new double-side-emitting OLED can provide independent pictures on both sides at the same time, or it can provide images on either side as needed. It introduces two new technologies for an improved underlying efficient electron injection layer and enhanced hole injection into the top emission OLED with the semitransparent metal cathode. With these two technologies, the electroluminescent performance is optimized for both top and bottom emission OLED. Moreover, the stability is also improved even after long-term operation with the use of a novel driving scheme.
The invention can be widely applied to small size display product such as personal digital assistant (PDA), digital still camera (DSC) and especially folding-type cell phone due to its capable of displaying two independent images one the front and rear side.
